Slow Cooker Chicken Recipe
I’ve come to realize that my kids love any type of meat that has a gravy and can be served over mashed potatoes. I mean who doesn’t love comfort food like this, because I know I love gravy-smothered taters too. Some of our favorites include Pork Roast and Gravy and Chicken Fried Steak.
I’ve been finding a lot of chicken breasts on mark-down at Aldi lately, and I decided to try a chicken and brown gravy recipe for the crock pot. Another option for chicken breasts in the slow cooker is this vintage Continental Chicken recipe.
Crock Pot Chicken and Brown Gravy
Taking inspiration from what I had on hand in the pantry, I came up with this easy chicken and gravy recipe for the crock pot.
This particular crock pot chicken and gravy recipe has a brown gravy instead of a white gravy. I personally think brown gravy has more flavor, and this recipe does not disappoint.
3 Ingredient Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy
This crock pot chicken and gravy only has three ingredients total.
One, of course, is the chicken itself. Use boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs depending on what you prefer or what you have on hand.
This chicken and gravy recipe is versatile so feel free to use anywhere from 2 – 4 chicken breasts or thighs.
The base of this brown gravy comes from two simple condensed soups – French Onion Soup and Golden Mushroom soup.
French Onion Soup is a favorite ingredient of mine when I want to add a punch of intense flavor. The Golden Mushroom Soup helps thicken up the brown gravy. If you can’t find Golden Mushroom Soup, go ahead and use cream of mushroom instead.

What to serve with chicken and gravy?
First off, you’ve got to serve this with some basic bread and butter, white bread or wheat bread. That’s how Grandma would have served chicken and brown gravy to my grandpa. The bread is used to sop up all the gravy.
Next, you’ve got the protein and starch covered, so I recommend going for some great vegetable sides. There’s nothing wrong with classic cooked peas or carrots; however, here’s 10 tasty vegetable dishes to serve with chicken and gravy over mashed potatoes.
- Lemon Carrots
- Sweet and Sour Green Beans with Bacon
- Simple and Sweet Coleslaw
- Fresh Broccoli Casserole
- Pan Roasted Summer Squash
- Old-Fashioned Creamed Peas
- Sour Cream Zucchini Casserole
- Air Fryer Cauliflower
- Crock Pot Cheesy Creamed Corn
- Old Fashioned Pickled Beets
Do you need to cook chicken before putting in slow cooker?
No, chicken (or any meat for that matter) can go in raw to a slow cooker or crock pot. The meat does not have be been cooked before adding it to a crock pot. The raw meat will cook in the crock pot.
However, the meat can be already cooked (such as browned ground beef or diced, cooked chicken breast) if you are making a quick soup or stew using a slow cooker. In that case, the meat is pre-cooked at the beginning of the recipe.
Can you slow cook meat without browning?
Yes, browning is an optional step for slow cooking meat. Often times, a recipe will state to brown the meat in oil in a skillet on the stove before adding it to the crock pot or slow cooker. The browning step will add more depth of flavor from the browning process; however, it is not a mandatory step. The browning step can be omitted for the sake of time.
