Simple and Sweet Coleslaw Recipe:

I love all types of slaw, but this creamy coleslaw recipe is my favorite.  The creaminess comes for the simple homemade coleslaw dressing which contains both Miracle Whip and milk – both adding to the creamy texture.

This easy coleslaw dressing recipe comes from a cook book I recently acquired from our local hospital staff. The recipe author calls it the Best Coleslaw, and I would have to agree.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a tangy slaw recipe like this Sweet and Sour Coleslaw, but this version (Coleslaw without vinegar) substitutes tangy for sweet.

What goes with coleslaw?

I love making slaw as a dish along with grilled steak or grilled pork steak during the summer.  With another simple side dish such as steamed asparagus or roasted zucchini, this sweet slaw is the perfect accompaniment.

Stock up on naan at the grocery store, brush with olive oil, toss on the grill for a couple minutes, and your meal is complete.

What’s coleslaw dressing made of?

A creamy coleslaw dressing is typically a base of mayonnaise or Miracle Whip.  To thin out the mayo or Miracle Whip, either milk, cream, lemon juice or vinegar is added.  If you want a tangy coleslaw dressing, add lemon juice or vinegar.  Or, if you’re going for a sweet slaw dressing, add milk or a little cream.

To season coleslaw dressing, use simple seasonings such as salt, black pepper, sugar, and/or celery seed.

What’s in a prepared coleslaw mix?

In the refrigerated section of the grocery store, you’ll find these convenient prepared coleslaw mixes consisting of shredded cabbage and carrots.  Sometimes, the colelaw mix bag contains green cabbage or other times a combination of green and purple cabbage.

What’s the difference between mayonnaise and Miracle Whip?

Mayonnaise contains egg yolks and oil which makes for a higher fat content and Miracle Whip contains more sugar which results in a sweeter flavor. Our slaw recipe with Miracle Whip is a sweeter coleslaw recipe due to the combination of the Miracle Whip and sugar.
