Classic Orange Julius is an easy and kid-friendly smoothie recipe perfect for a hot, summer day. A drink made in the blender just screams FUN! This copycat recipe for Orange Julius is a blast from the past.
The only thing that might make this recipe better is using vanilla ice cream instead of milk. But then it wouldn’t be an Orange Julius, it would be an orange creamsicle milkshake! Oh, they both sound so delicious!
Classic Orange Julius Recipe
Our great-aunt Gertie shared this recipe in the Pot O’ Gold Cookbook from the St. Patrick Altar Society of Imogene, Iowa. She gave a copy of the cookbook to our grandparents on their 60th wedding anniversary. Barbara treasures this cookbook as a special reminder of our grandparents who are no longer with us.
The great thing about this recipe is that you can customize it to your taste. Is a half cup of sugar too sweet for you? Go with one-fourth cup instead.

Notes About Orange Julius Smoothie:
- Want a different flavor? Add some pineapple juice or fresh strawberries.
- Whole milk gives the thickest texture, but other types work too.
- Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra creaminess.
- This copycat Orange Julius uses a half of the typical size frozen OJ concentrate. Take a sharp knife, and cut through the cardboard. Place the other half in a resealable bag, and place back in the freezer.
- The original classic orange julius recipe calls for a half cup of sugar but we use a quarter cup and adjust to our preferred level of sweetness. Use as much or as little as you prefer.
