French Onion Sliders are a cheesy-topped ground beef sloppy Joe mixture baked on Hawaiian rolls and drizzled in an delectable butter sauce. Make them for dinner or for a party, but just know, your family will be begging for more.

French Onion Sliders Recipe:

My friend, Patty, introduced me to one of her family’s favorite meals called French Onion Sloppy Joes.  It’s a super-fast dinner option. Just think a cross between a traditional Sloppy Joe and French Onion Soup. Some folks have compared these to maid-rite sandwiches too.

These French Onion Sliders take that amazing ground beef mixture up a notch to a whole new level.  First off, we use Hawaiian Rolls as the buns.  The trick is to purchase a 12 pack and leave them attached.  Take a serrated knife and cut the entire pack of buns in half so that you have a large, rectangular top and bottom bun. See photo below.

Layer two is the fast French Onion Beef Mixture consisting of browned ground beef, condensed French Onion Soup and some water and flour as a thickener. Top this with a healthy layer of shredded cheese.   If you love cheese, go heavy or if there’s just a little left in the bottom of the bag, use up what you have.

Put the top bun on, and then finish with the big finale.  What could make this even more delicious? Butter, yes melted butter combined with dried minced onions, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and salt.  Pour that sinful sauce over the top of the sandwiches and never look back.

Here’s a quick recap of the French onion beef sliders:

  1. Bottom Bun
  2. French Onion Beef Mixture
  3. Shredded Cheese (Mozzarella or Swiss)
  4. Top Bun
  5. Butter Sauce

These sliders are great for parties, pitch-ins or just a weeknight dinner. Serving a crowd? Make a batch of these mini French Onion ground beef sandwiches and a batch of these King’s Hawaiian Roll Ham Sandwiches and everyone will be happy.

How to Make French Onion Sliders:

Instructions:

  1. Make French onion sloppy joes by browning ground beef; drain excess grease. Add condensed French onion soup, salt and pepper, and a mixture of flour and water to the drained beef, and heat until thickened.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13 x 9 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray or line with foil.
  3. Cut a package of Hawaiian Rolls in half; layer bottom half in the prepared dish.
  4. Layer prepared French onion sloppy joe mix over buns; sprinkle with Mozzarella or Swiss cheese, add top layer of buns.
  5. Microwave butter until melted; stir in Worcestershire sauce, dried minced onion, salt and mustard into the butter; pour over the top of the sandwich buns. Let the sandwiches sit for 10 minutes.
  6. Cover tightly with foil, and bake for 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted.
  7. Cut into individual sliders.

Notes About French Onion Beef Sliders:

  • It’s much easier to cut these super bowl sliders into individual sandwiches after baking than to construct each slider individually from the start.
  • To prevent the French onion sliders from sticking to the bottom of the pan after baking, spray the pan with nonstick cooking spray or line the pan with aluminum foil.
  • My family prefers shredded Mozzarella cheese but Swiss or Gruyere would be amazing. You could also use slices of cheese, we’ve used Provolone slices before.
  • Be sure to cover the sandwiches tightly with foil before baking to prevent the tops from burning.
  • If you use salted butter for the sauce, you may need to omit the salt in the sauce.
  • Have extra cans of condensed French Onion Soup? Try our French Onion Rice Casserole, French Onion Pork Chops, Crock Pot Pork Roast and Gravy or French Onion Shepherds Pie.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 10.5 ounces condensed French onion soup
  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 1/3 cup water
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 package Hawaiian Sweet Rolls, 12 counts
  • 2 cups shredded Mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard

Instructions

  • Brown ground beef in a skillet; drain excess grease if needed.
  • In a small bowl, whisk flour and water until smooth; add to ground beef with condensed French onion soup. Heat until thick, season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13 x 9 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray OR line with foil.
  • Take the package of Hawaiian rolls, and cut the entire sheet in half creating a rectangular bottom bun and top bun (do not separate into individual slider buns yet).
  • Layer bottom sheet of buns in the prepared baking dish. Top with prepared French Onion Sloppy Joes, spreading the ground beef mixture from edge to edge.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheese over the French Onion Joes; add the top rectangular bun.
  • In a microwavable bowl, melt butter. Add dried minced onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt and mustard and stir until combined. Pour over the top of the sliders, spreading it to cover all buns and allowing it to drip over the sides.
  • Let the buns sit for 10 minutes to absorb the butter mixture.
  • Cover tightly with foil; bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
  • Cut into individual sliders.
