What to Expect
This week at These Old Cookbooks, we are serving up delicious meals that Grandma would approve. All of these recipes have simple ingredients (see our grocery list at the bottom of this post) and are easy to follow.
We’ve got some time-saving strategies this week! Our main strategy is to brown up a couple extra pounds of ground beef on the weekend when we are making our Classic Coney Island Sauce. Then we will be ahead on time during the week when we are making Taco Salad and French Onion Joes. Drain the excess oil from the ground beef, cool, and store in resealable plastic bags or storage containers in the refrigerator.
We’ve also chosen recipes that have the same ingredients such as celery seeds which is found in both the Coney Sauce and Sweet and Sour Coleslaw. Dry mustard and garlic powder also makes an appearance in multiple recipes. Kidney beans, frozen corn and shredded cheddar cheese are also ingredients that you can stock up on in larger quantities to save money if possible.
There are also some substitutions you could make to save money. Instead of buying red onions for the black bean caviar, just use the same white or yellow onion that you are already using the Sweet and Sour Coleslaw.
See the grocery list below (we didn’t include the ingredients from recipes NOT on our site). You most likely won’t need everything on that list. We are betting that you have many of these ingredients already in your refrigerator or pantry!
