These cookies are famous. Our mom has been making them for an eternity, and they’ve been one of my go-to recipes since I graduated college. Just recently, a college girlfriend called asking me why this recipe wasn’t on the blog. She and her Mom were having a contest for the best chocolate chip cookies, and my recipe was in the running.

What’s special and unique about this version? These are a chocolate chip cookie recipe with Crisco, to be specific butter flavored Crisco.

By using butter flavored Crisco, you get the flavor of butter but the texture of a Crisco chocolate chip cookie. Crisco is shortening which means there’s no water in the fat.  This results in a soft and tender cookie.  The edges are barely crisp with a perfectly soft chocolate chip cookie.

I’ll be honest. I’m kinda a chocolate chip cookie snob.  These Crisco chocolate chip cookies are perfect which makes it hard for me to enjoy any other version. However, I really enjoy these Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies and these Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies with Nuts and Coconut.

I buy the butter flavored Crisco sticks. They are one cup exactly which is what this recipe calls for. One stick equals one batch of chocolate chip cookies with Crisco. You’ll find these in the baking aisle at the supermarket or check out our Amazon store to find them and many of our other essential pantry items.

Ingredients to Make Our Mom’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • Butter-flavored Crisco
  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar (granulated sugar)
  • Eggs
  • Flour
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Chocolate chips

How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookies without Butter:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Cream Crisco, brown sugar and white sugar together until creamy.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing in between. Mix in vanilla.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt.
  5. Add in 3 increments, barely stirring in between.
  6. Stir in chocolate chips.
  7. Add by spoonfuls onto a nonstick cookie sheet.
  8. Bake for 8 to 9 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges and cracked at top.
  9. Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes before removing to a cooling rack.
