Let’s start at the beginning. It all began with these Yellow Cake Mix Gooey Bars. You can’t go wrong with these ooey, gooey, buttery, sweet treats.
Well that got me thinking about some ooey gooey butter cake variations. What could be better than these perfect treats? The answer is easy if you come from a chocolate-loving family like mine. Chocolate Ooey Gooey Cake is a chocolate-lovers dream come true.
The bottom layer of Chocolate Gooey Butter Cake is actually more like a brownie while the top layer is a decadent soft, fudgy delight.
The ingredients are simple.
Layer one: chocolate cake mix, butter, and eggs
Layer two: cream cheese, powdered sugar, eggs and cocoa powder
I guess you could say that these should really be called Double Chocolate Gooey Butter Cakes since the bottom layer has a devil’s food cake crust, and the top layer is a cocoa-laced cream cheese mixture. Let’s be honest, you can never have too much chocolate.
How to Make Double Chocolate Gooey Butter Cakes:
- Mix dry cake mix and melted butter; add eggs and beat until smooth.
- Press the chocolate mix into the bottom of a 13 x 9 inch greased baking dish.
- For the second layer, mix softened cream cheese, eggs, powdered sugar and cocoa powder until smooth and lump free.
- Pour over the bottom layer.
- Bake in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 40 minutes or until the center is set but not completely firm.
- Dust with powdered sugar on top if desired.

Notes About Chocolate Ooey Gooey Bars with Cake Mix:
- I used a chocolate devil’s food cake mix, but you can use any type of dry chocolate cake mix.
- Be sure the cream cheese is softened before making this recipe so that the top layer doesn’t have clumps.
- Add chopped nuts to the top layer if desired.

Ingredients
Bottom Layer
- 13.5 ounce box of chocolate cake mix (dry)
- 2 eggs
- 1 stick melted butter (1/2 cup)
Top Layer
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 eggs
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13 x 9 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- Mix together dry cake mix and eggs; add melted butter and mix until smooth.
- Press into prepared baking dish.
- For second layer, mix softened cream cheese, eggs, powdered sugar and cocoa powder.
- Pour over the first layer.
- Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes or until the the top is baked but still slightly gooey. Do not overbake.
- Optional: sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
