Ham Steak and Potatoes in the Oven
I have a freezer full of ham steak, and I am always searching for new ways to use up ham steak.
Usually, I make ham steak one of two ways: broiled in the oven with a brown sugar topping or in a skillet with maple gravy. Both ways are yummy, but I was really wanting a creamy ham steak and potato casserole.
And then, it came to men as I was strolling the aisles of the grocery store. The perfect, easy way to make ham steak in the oven topped with scalloped potatoes.
I took inspiration from my Mom’s Pork Chop Potato Casserole. It’s so simple to make just a handful of ingredients.
Ham Steak and Potato Casserole
This easy casserole only has 4 ingredients with one of them being optional! It doesn’t get much easier than that.
Layer your ham steak on the bottom of the baking dish and then top with a layer of sliced potatoes. Then to make the ham steak casserole hold together, pick out your favorite type of cream soup and layer it over the potatoes.
Here’s the big decision, do you want a cheesy ham steak and potato casserole or a traditional ham steak casserole. I make it both ways depending on my mood.
If you decide to go for a cheesy ham steak casserole, use your favorite type of shredded cheese. Sprinkle it over the top at the very end and let it sit in the oven that has turned off until the cheese is ooey, gooey and melted.
Ingredient List for Ham Steak and Scalloped Potatoes
Ham Steak (smoked)
Potatoes, washed, peeled and sliced
Cream Soup (cream of celery, cream of mushroom or cream of chicken)
Shredded Cheese (optional), cheddar of Colby Jack
Ham Steak Dinner for Two or More
The great thing about ham steak and scalloped potatoes is that it can be made into a ham steak dinner for two or it can be made for a huge crowd or family.
Basically, use enough ham steak and potatoes for the number of people you are feeding.
If you are wanting a ham steak dinner for two, use one single ham steak, a couple potatoes and one can of cream soup.
Or, you can easily add more pieces of ham steak and more potatoes; just use additional cans of cream soup to cover the potatoes.
You really can’t screw this up, I promise.
How to Use Leftover Ham Steak?
If you’ve got leftover ham steak or potatoes, dice them up, and stir them into a hearty breakfast skillet meal. Add melted butter to the frying pan, and then layer up the leftovers with peppers and onions, and fry it to your desired texture. It’s delicious! You could even add bacon or sausage.

Made it for me and my fiancé. He loved it!
Glad he enjoyed it!
Hope mine turns out okay. It’s in the oven now but I just realized I think we’re using two different types of ham? Mine is the prepackaged ham steak that Hatfield makes.
Should be the same!
very good it was a hit and no leftovers
Great! Thanks for sharing!
My favorite meal of the day is breakfast. In the morning, I need a hearty meal with some protein. I will not survive the morning on a granola bar and/or some yogurt or cereal. Nothing sweet in the morning! Adding to the problem…. I cannot eat as soon as I get up and I commute an hour to work. I need to have an easy microwavable or toaster oven meal to reheat around 8AM. This sounds perfectly delicious. Since I am making for only myself, if I use only ounce ham steak, do I still use the entire can of soup? I am also watching my sodium. Thank You!
It won’t hurt to use a whole can but I would just make sure the potatoes and ham are nicely covered.
could you use a raw ham steak in this recipe?
A raw ham steak – one that isn’t smoked/cured – might be a bit tough in the recipe. Having said that, we haven’t tried it.
I am making this now. I am using 2 Hatfield pre-packaged ham steaks, each cut into 4 pieces. I added the sliced potatoes. Seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder and paprika. Then I combined cream of celery and cheddar cheese Campbell’s soups and poured that over the top. Lastly, I will top with cheddar jack cheese. With these ingredients, how can you go wrong?
