Ingredient List for Crumbled Sausage Casserole
The original name of this recipe in my West Virginia cook book was Sausage Dinner, which in all honesty serves it well since ground pork sausage is the star ingredient of this easy casserole.
- Ground Pork Sausage
- Butter (or margarine)
- Garlic
- Onions diced (or dried minced)
- Wide Egg Noodles
- Heavy Whipping Cream
- Shredded or Grated Cheddar Cheese
I made this one night, and my Mom just happened to stop by as I pulled the easy ground sausage casserole out of the oven. She was quite impressed as was my entire family.
The star, as I said before, is a simple package of bulk pork sausage. It gets combined with cooked wide egg noodles, shredded cheddar cheese plus a simple sauce.

Sausage Casserole with Egg Noodles
The first thing that caught my eye with this recipe is the crumbled pork sausage. I collect bulk sausage recipes like I do keepsakes. Plus, this recipe is so much different than my other favorites.
The base of the casserole is almost like a baked macaroni and cheese; then it’s topped with a generous helping of fried and crumbled pork sausage which melts into a layer of shredded cheese.
How to Make a Casserole Using Ground Pork Sausage
- Cook wide egg noodles to al dente; drain and set aside.
- Simmer pork sausage in a large skillet with a little water, crumbling as it cooks.
- Drain excess grease, and remove cooked pork sausage to a dish to the side.
- Melt the butter, and cook onions and garlic over medium low heat for approximately 5 minutes, being careful not to burn it.
- Add cooked noodles, 1 cup shredded cheese, and heavy whipping cream to the butter mixture, and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, and pour into a greased 13 x 9 inch baking dish.
- Layer cooked pork sausage over top of the noodle mixture; sprinkle with the remaining cheddar cheese.
- Bake for 20 minutes in a preheated 350 degree F oven.

Notes About Easy Pork Sausage Casserole
- I use ground breakfast sausage, but any type or flavor of ground (bulk) pork sausage will work.
- Feel free to swap in another type of noodle or pasta. Just cook it according to package instructions to al dente and drain well.
- Swap in other types of cheese for Cheddar cheese, if desired.
- I prefer to grate my own cheese for this casserole because it melts better over top.
- If you do not have heavy whipping cream, use regular milk thickened with a tablespoon of flour.
- To make my life easier, I use jarred minced garlic and minced dried onions in this recipe and many others.
- I have a handy utensil called a meat chopper that works great when cooking bulk pork sausage or ground beef. I highly recommend getting one to make your life easier.
