Salisbury Steak Recipe
I never grew up eating Salisbury Steak which is actually really surprising since we always had a freezer full of beef. In all honesty, before I learned how yummy it is, I associated it with those freezer meals from the 90s. You know the ones, right?
The ones I begged my mom to buy me, but she never did. She was too busy feeding us homemade deliciousness, not that I realized it at the time. Little did I know that it was actually exactly the type of comfort food my family craves.
What is Salisbury steak recipe?
Salisbury steak is typically an oval shaped meat patty made with a mixture of ground beef, seasonings, and bread crumbs, similar to that of meatloaf. Most often, the hamburger patty (or hamburger steak as it’s often called) is served topped with a brown gravy with mushrooms and/or onions.
Quick and Easy Salisbury Steak Recipe
I found this traditional Salisbury steak recipe in A Campbell Cookbook, straight from 1968. The recipe grabbed my attention since it only has 5 ingredients, not counting black pepper or water.
If you’ve never tried Golden Mushroom Soup, it’s very similar to cream of mushroom soup except it has more mushroom flavor and a deeper brown color. It is found in the same aisle at the grocery store. As I looked at this old fashioned recipe, I realized that it was essentially just a meatloaf with a rich brown gravy.

Yes, Salisbury steak is a great make-ahead freezer recipe. Mix the ingredients to form the beef patties; however, do not cover them with the gravy. Instead, freeze the patties individually on a sheet pan in the freezer. Once frozen, put the patties in a zip-lock bag. Store for up to 3 months in the freezer. Let the patties thaw in the fridge. Then, make the gravy and bake as directed in the recipe.
