This Easy Triple Chocolate Cake is made with just five ingredients and mixed in one bowl making it a simple, quick dessert option. This old fashioned, chocolate Bundt cake uses chocolate cake mix and pudding mix, both great shortcut ingredients. Add in some chocolate chips and that is where the “triple chocolate” comes in to play.
We love a from-scratch cake as much as anyone but let’s be honest time is not always on our side. Being able to pull a couple of mixes from the pantry and add some milk and eggs to create a gorgeous cake that also tastes great is awesome. That’s when this old fashioned chocolate pudding cake recipe comes in handy.
Barbara found this Easy Triple Chocolate Cake recipe while thumbing through In the Kettle at Van Duyn cookbook. As you can see from the photo below, she has several other recipes in this cookbook marked to try.
Easy Triple Chocolate Cake Recipe
With both the chocolate pudding mix and the BAG of chocolate chips, this Easy Triple Chocolate Cake is decadent. It doesn’t need frosting but if you want to make it look fancier, add a simple drizzle of frosting, sprinkle with powdered sugar or add a chocolate ganache or frosting.
Honestly, just baking this cake in a Bundt pan makes it look fancier. A tip from Barbara…instead of dusting the Bundt pan with white flour after greasing, use cocoa powder so it looks prettier when you take it out of the pan. None of that white flour left over on your pretty cake.
I think it is great that this cake is so fancy, but what I love about it is made in just one bowl. How great is that!

Why should I add pudding mix to my cake?
The purpose of an instant pudding mix in cake recipes is to add a fluffy, moist texture to the cake. Once you go the pudding route, it’s hard to go any other way. It’s almost fail-proof.
How to Make Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Cake:
Scroll down for the full instructions for chocolate Bundt cake with cake mix and pudding:
- In a bowl, mix eggs, chocolate cake mix, instant chocolate pudding mix, milk and chocolate chips.
- Grease all sides generously with shortening; flour all sides (or use cocoa powder).
- Pour batter into prepared Bundt pan.
- Bake in a preheated oven until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cool and then take a knife around the edges to loosen the cake before inverting to cooling rack.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar or frost as desired.
When should you flip a Bundt cake to remove it from the pan?
Resist the urge to remove a Bundt cake from its pan immediately out of the oven. Instead, let the cake cool on the counter for 5-10 minutes before removing from pan.
How do I remove a Bundt cake from its pan?
Let the Bundt cake cool for 10 minutes. Take a knife, and gently run it around the outer and inner edges of the cake pan to loosen it. Place a cooling rack or large plate over the pan; and then flip it over quickly. If the Bundt pan was properly greased before adding the cake batter, the cake should easily slide out of the Bundt pan onto the cooling rack or plate.
Notes About Chocolate Bundt Cake with Pudding Mix:
- Use instant chocolate pudding mix, not the cook type.
- German chocolate, dark chocolate or any other flavored cake mix could be substituted for a fun mix-up.
- Grease all sides of the Bundt pan generously with shortening even the inner circle. This ensures the cake comes out without sticking.
- Powdered sugar hides any imperfections on the cake.
- Frost with a chocolate ganache or frosting, if desired.
