What to Expect

This week at These Old Cookbooks, we are serving up delicious meals that Grandma would approve. All of these recipes have simple ingredients, so be sure to see our grocery list at the bottom of this post.

The temperature is soaring this week, so we are lining up an entire meal that will keep the kitchen cool. There are very few steps that require the oven, instead we’ll be utilizing the slow cooker and grill for our menu items. A great tip is to do any prep work involving to stove or oven early in the morning or late at night when the temperatures are the coolest.  This is exactly what Grandma would do, and we always strive to be like her.

We’ve got some time-saving strategies this week!  First, we are giving you permission to buy a rotisserie chicken at the grocery store. Shred the chicken when you bring it home, so you can use it in our Vegetable Pizza with Ranch Chicken. There’s no need to heat up the kitchen when you can purchase this great shortcut!  Also, we suggest swapping farro in the Mango Kale Farro Salad for a microwavable package of grains – whatever type can find or prefer. Farro is typically cooked on the stove-top with boiling water, and that really heats up the kitchen.

This week’s menu uses three types of vinegar – white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, and red wine vinegar. In all reality, you could buy one type and use it in all three recipes to save yourself some money. In addition, many of the recipes call for vegetables such as cucumbers, celery, carrots and cauliflower, so save the extras to eat later on with BLT dip.

See the grocery list below, but remember we didn’t include the ingredients from recipes NOT on our site. You most likely won’t need everything on that list because we are betting that you have many of these ingredients already in your refrigerator or pantry!
