Slow Cooker Baked Beans Recipe

This particular recipe was created from 2 separate recipes.  I liked aspects of a saucy crock pot baked bean and a Texas baked bean casserole, so I picked the ingredients I had on hand and modified it for this new recipe.

Mainly, I like it because the baked beans are saucy and sweet, just the way I prefer. These Slow Cooker Baked Beans are great for parties because you can free up precious oven space for other dishes. I served them along side of Oven Pulled Pork and Corn Casserole.  The whole meal was a hit with my entire extended family.

  • Switch up the types of beans. Cowboy beans like these are versatile. Try white beans, baked beans, red kidney beans, cannellini beans, etc.
  • Add diced onions and/or minced garlic.
  • If desired, cook the bacon first, and add the bacon grease too for more flavor.
  • Substitute Dijon mustard or whole grain mustard for yellow mustard.
  • For a bit of tang, add a splash of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar.

Recipe FAQs

  • This is a dump and go recipe; all the ingredients go into the slow cooker insert, stir, cover and cook.
  • I use 2 cans of pork and beans, 1 can of great northern, and 1 can of chili beans, but you could swap in some Lima beans or red kidney beans if that’s what you have. It’s pretty versatile.
  • Be sure to drain the great northern beans, but keep the pork and beans and chili beans undrained—this keeps them saucy.
  • I use mild chili beans. If your family likes things a bit spicier, you can use hot chili beans.
  • Use your favorite barbecue sauce. I used a honey barbecue sauce to give the baked beans a bit more sweetness.
  • Try using a slow cooker liner to make clean up a cinch.
