This Creamed Chipped Beef Gravy is the fancy version of that old time classic recipe. Our version is upgraded with mushrooms, sour cream, cheddar cheese and parsley for a new spin on an old favorite.
Chipped Beef Gravy
Chipped beef gravy has many names. SOS. Shit on a Shingle. Chipped Beef on a Shingle. Save our Stomachs. No matter what you call it, it’s one of those recipes that you grow to love. It was often served in the military, and thus, has a certain level of nostalgia to it.
While we didn’t grow up eating chipped beef gravy, our mom often made sausage gravy or even hamburger gravy over toast for a quick dinner. So we appreciate a good gravy over toast supper once in a while! Try our friend Jent’s Homemade Sausage Gravy for breakfast or dinner!
We eat our classic version of chipped beef gravy over toast often. This fancy version contains onion, sour cream, mushrooms, cheddar cheese and parsley which gives the classic dish a whole new spin. Try this dried beef gravy over pasta to take the presentation up a notch from regular toast.
Ingredients
- Butter
- Diced Onions
- Milk
- All Purpose Flour
- Dried Beef (chipped beef)
- Sour Cream
- Canned Mushrooms
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese
- Dried Parsley
- Salt and Black Pepper (optional)
How To Make Creamed Chipped Beef Gravy
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat; melt butter and sauté onions until soft.
- Add flour and stir with a whisk; cook for 30 seconds.
- Pour in milk, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens over low heat to medium low heat.
- Add dried beef, sour cream, mushrooms, cheddar cheese and parsley. Heat until warmed through.
- Serve over toast, cooked pasta rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes or biscuits.
Storage Instructions
Let leftovers cool. Transfer to an airtight container, and store in the fridge.

Ingredients
- 6 ounces chipped beef
- 5 Tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 4 Tablespoons flour
- 2 3/4 cups milk
- 1 cup sour cream
- 4 ounces canned mushrooms, drained
- 8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 Tablespoons dried parsley
Instructions
- Cut dried beef into small pieces.
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add onion and cook until softened.
- Add flour and stir; cook for 30 seconds.
- Add milk, stirring constantly until thickened.
- Add sour cream, beef, mushrooms, cheese and parsely. Heat until warmed through.
- Serve over toast or cooked pasta.
