What is cranberry fluff?

Cranberry fluff is an old fashioned recipe that has been served at Christmas, Thanksgiving and even Easter for decades. It’s likely that your Grandma (or Mom) served this up at Christmases past.

This old school cranberry salad is flavored with fresh cranberries that get ground up into small pieces. The result is a perfectly pink color that accents the entire dinner table.

We love this type of old-fashioned salads and we have SO MANY here on our blog. Some of our favorites are Ambrosia Salad, Cherry Fluff, Pink Lady Salad and Watergate Salad.

Can you make cranberry salad ahead of time?

Yes, old fashioned cranberry salad is the perfect recipe to make ahead for the holidays. By making it a couple weeks ahead of time, and then freezing it, you’ll have more time to focus on the other recipes.

Make the recipe as directed, place in an airtight freezer container, and freeze. I recommend getting the cranberry fluff out of the freezer the night before serving. Let it defrost in the refrigerator, and stir well before serving.

Old Fashioned Cranberry Salad with Walnuts

The ground cranberries get sweetened with a handful of vintage Cool Whip salad ingredients.

I feel like every old school Cool Whip salad has a variety of these same ingredients. This cranberry fluff has crushed pineapple (drained well), chopped walnuts (or pecans), mini marshmallows and whipped topping (Cool Whip).

My favorite part of the whole salad is the mini marshmallows, they soak up the cranberry flavor while getting perfectly soft and melt in your mouth.
