How to Make French Toast with Amaretto

Step by Step Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk egg, milk, vanilla extract and Amaretto.
  2. Heat large skillet or griddle, add butter to melt.
  3. Dip bread slices in the egg mixture on each side.
  4. Cook the french toast slices on each side until golden brown.
  5. If desired, garnish with toasted coconut.

Recipe Variations

  • Use any type of bread slices including brioche, challah or regular sliced bread.
  • Swap almond extract for vanilla extract.
  • Garnish with toasted almonds.
  • Serve with a dollop of strawberry jam, blueberries, blackberries or Greek yogurt.
  • Make an amaretto syrup by boiling down amaretto until it thickens.

Do you soak French toast before cooking?

Yes, you can soak the bread, but be sure it’s not for too long, which can make the French toast too soggy and difficult to handle. For this Amaretto French Toast, a few seconds per side in the egg mixture is enough to ensure the bread is adequately coated without becoming overly soggy.

Is it normal for French toast to be soggy in the middle?

French toast should not be soggy in the middle. When making French toast, it is important to ensure that the bread is adequately coated in the egg mixture, but not soaked for too long, as this can lead to sogginess. Cook the French toast until it is golden brown on both sides to ensure that it is cooked through and not soggy in the middle.
