Ingredients

German Chocolate Icing

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 1/3 cups shredded coconut

Brownies

  • 1 package your favorite brownie mix
  • 3 egg whites
  • vegetable oil (check the brownie box)
  • water (check the brownie box)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13 x 9 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • In a small saucepan, bring evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks and margarine to a boil. Continue to boil for 12 minutes while stirring constantly.
  • Remove from heat; stir in vanilla extract, chopped pecans and coconut. Set aside.

  • Make brownie batter according to package instructions, using leftover 3 whites in place of the whole eggs.

  • Cover with foil, and bake 40-45 minutes or until just cooked in the center. Do not overbake.

Notes

  • Use your favorite box mix of brownies. Follow the directions on the back except use the 3 egg whites instead of the whole eggs the box calls for.
  • Be sure to cover with foil so that the extra sugar in the icing dollops do not burn.
  • Do not overbake these brownies. Bake until just set in the center.
  • I think these are even better the second day as the brownies continue to soak up some of the decadent icing.
