- 6 cups fresh broccoli florets
- 1/2 cup bacon, fried and crumbled
- 1/2 cup raisins (dark or golden)
- 1/4 cup red onion, finely diced
- 1/2 cup sunflower seeds (optional)
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 2 1/2 Tablespoons white vinegar
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese
In a large bowl, combine bite-sized broccoli florets, fried bacon, raisins, onion and sunflower seeds.
Use a smaller bowl to whisk together mayonnaise, white vinegar and sugar.
Pour sweet dressing over broccoli mixture; stir until combined.
Chill for a minimum 1 hour or longer.
Right before serving, stir in shredded cheese.
- For the best flavor, make this classic broccoli salad ahead of time so that the flavors all meld together in the refrigerator.
- Dark or golden raisins can be used.
- Red onion is preferable but white or yellow would work in a pinch.
- Miracle Whip could be used in as a substitute for regular mayonnaise. In this case, cut down on the sugar in the sweet dressing.
- Use whatever your favorite type of cheese in this recipe. Cheddar or Colby is my favorite. You can add as little or as much as your heart desires.
- Do not stir in the cheese until right before serving. That way if the bacon is still warm, you won't melt the cheese.
