Ingredients

  • 6 cups fresh broccoli florets
  • 1/2 cup bacon, fried and crumbled
  • 1/2 cup raisins (dark or golden)
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds (optional)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 1/2 Tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheese

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine bite-sized broccoli florets, fried bacon, raisins, onion and sunflower seeds.

  • Use a smaller bowl to whisk together mayonnaise, white vinegar and sugar.

  • Pour sweet dressing over broccoli mixture; stir until combined.

  • Chill for a minimum 1 hour or longer.
  • Right before serving, stir in shredded cheese.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, make this classic broccoli salad ahead of time so that the flavors all meld together in the refrigerator. 
  • Dark or golden raisins can be used. 
  • Red onion is preferable but white or yellow would work in a pinch. 
  • Miracle Whip could be used in as a substitute for regular mayonnaise. In this case, cut down on the sugar in the sweet dressing. 
  • Use whatever your favorite type of cheese in this recipe. Cheddar or Colby is my favorite. You can add as little or as much as your heart desires. 
  • Do not stir in the cheese until right before serving. That way if the bacon is still warm, you won't melt the cheese.
