Ham Slice Recipe

A large fully-cooked ham steak can feed several people with no problem. Add a side salad or your favorite vegetable and some warm biscuits and your entire family will enjoy the meal. Our family is always on the lookout for ham steak dinner ideas as we usually have a freezer full of pork.

Ham steak is easy to prepare. It can be fried up in butter on the stove, broiled in the oven with a brown sugar glaze (check out this recipe), or even grilled outdoors.

Barbara came up with this maple glazed ham steak recipe when she was looking for a quick weeknight meal. Some nights, she doesn’t want to bake. It only takes 12 minutes from stove to table and that is a win. Plus, the flavor is great.

What is a ham steak?

A ham steak is simply a thick cut of a smoked ham. Instead of buying a whole ham which is huge and serves a large number of people, a ham steak is an individual slice of the larger ham. A ham steak is meant to serve one to four people depending on its size and is more economical than buying a whole ham.

Where can I buy ham steaks?

You can usually find ham steaks at your local grocery store (ask at the meat counter) or your local meat market. If you are getting a whole or half hog butchered, consider getting your ham cut into steaks. This will fill your freezer with many individual ham steaks instead of one large ham. This is great for dinners throughout the year.

A ham slice is also a great option for Christmas or Easter when you are only feeding a couple people, in which a whole ham is just too much. Our favorite place to get ham steaks locally is at Rihm Foods in Cambridge City, Indiana. We also love their smoked bacon and County Fair Burgers (pork burgers, yum).

How to cook old-fashioned ham steak on stove

If you are wondering about how to cook ham steaks on the stove, it’s super easy. Since they are already fully cooked,  all you need to do is to melt 2-4 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet. Fry the ham steaks until lightly browned and warmed through on both sides.

To make it extra yummy, add a ham glaze such as this maple glaze. To do this, we put it back in the skillet with the maple gravy for a couple minutes to warm it up and coat it on all sides.
